Fallout 1 and 2 (Fallout 4 mods)

A few months ago, I was made aware of a mod in development that intended to port the entirety of the Fallout 1 game into the Fallout 4 engine transforming what was originally an isometric RPG into a fully explorable 3D world with the graphics and gameplay capabilities of Fallout 4, while still retaining the gameplay features, perks and skills of the original. This Fallout 1 full 3D experience is far enough in the development cycle that it also comes with a playable demo on the Nexus called Fallout Vault 13.

If you don't have time to check it out by yourself (because of Bethesda recent shenanigans it requires some user's work on Fallout 4 to even work, mainly a downgraded version of Fallout 4 from the last patch -- again thanks Bethesda, great job there), there's also a short video featuring this demo available here

A couple of days ago my friend Liera from the channel Liera Plays pointed the existence of a similar project for Fallout 2 called "Project Arroyo". I don't have a link to a playable demo for this mod but here's something to wet your appetite nevertheless: Project Arroyo Locations trailer.

Project Arroyo is not to be confused with another Fallout 2 project floating around (dubbed: Legendary Fallout 2 3D project) that ports Fallout 2 in 3D but still using the textures and graphics of the original game (and boy, as seen in the video, they didn't age well, not enough to be in full 1st person 3D at any rate).

The ETA for those two mods is of course TBD, that is if they ever make it to a final version. As we all know, there's a long long way between having a great idea for a mod and actually finalizing it and it sometimes requires some zigzag between copyright issues -- as far as I know Bethesda don't own the copyright for the music of the original Fallout games, so much so that that music was included in Fallout New Vegas after proper authorization was given, so there's clearly a question mark there.

I'm still not sure I won't still prefer playing the originals (for nostalgia value, or just call me sentimental -- which I am, I admit it without shame :) ) but I'll only know when I get to actually play those mods.

Still worth to keep on the radar. ;D

I got into the franchise with the original Fallout, so this is cool to see.  On the other hand, I didn't take to Fallout 4 so I no longer have it in my collection.  Which is an interesting discussion to have in its own right (i.e. would you keep a game not for its own merits but for the chance modders eventually make something better with it), but doesn't help me out much here.

Ahh.  I saw the newest member and couldn't grok the post count, wondered if something fishy was going on, but that explains it.

Sometime ago I started to replay the original Fallout and found, nostalgia aside, I just couldn't get back into it.  We've come too far in terms of technology and gameplay for me to return to its isometric perspective and purely turn-based combat.  Maybe if they were to remake it in a form similar to the new XCOM games, what with their flashier presentation and all, but for me I think Fallout 3 is the point of no return (as in that's the oldest Fallout I still enjoy).

From what I hear, Fallout London seems definitely worth of keeping a copy of F4 at hand. But I don't have any personal opinion as I still have to play it.

I can assure you, there's nothing "fishy" going on. You can consider Liera as a trusted member. No spam or shenanigans or discrete hacking of the forum involved here.

I'm still fond of the original games. I've been replaying F1 not so long ago and I've re-started F2. My own difficulties were with F4 but curiously those vanished after I played Starfield. It's sad to realize that the newest Bethesda game is so lacking that F4 (that I considered not terribly good itself) is far more preferable. Yep, sad times...

That really sucks. The project was looking good so far. But having been myself part of the team of a failed mod so long ago (anyone remember Nuclear Target? Maybe not...), I can imagine a number of reasons for that to happen. Maybe someone will pick up the torch and carry it since the project will become open source. It would still remain a awful lot of work to be done though.
