Uh...Do We Really Need A Remake of SS2?

System Shock 2: Enhanced Edition coming soon...GOG news.

It's also being advertised on Steam so hooray for that, I guess.

The release date will be announced later this month (March, for those of you keeping track of these things). Probably.

But really: is this necessary? SS2, through the magic of the fabulous fiends of TTLG, is still very much playable if you're willing to put in the effort of installing it. If not...well, I guess this is for you. :P

If they try to pull this remake nonsense with TDP/TG or T2, I hope an asteroid kills the planet.

DISCLAIMER: if this post seems somewhat doleful and/or negative in feel, be aware that it is currently five minutes to 5am and I would like to end this sentence right now.

Plus really, from the screenshots, I don't know what is enhanced in their "enhanced" version. I finished replaying it a couple of weeks ago (GOG version) and I can't even see a difference. I was expecting more, at least in the graphics and models departments, because the gameplay is fine, no need to change that.

Add to that that their remake of the first System Shock though not being absolutely awful is somewhat weak sauce. I mean the only feature that every player hated in the first System Shock (so much so that they got rid of it for SS2) was the cyberspace portions and that's what they kept! They could at least have offered an option to skip them or get rid of the damn mines -- frankly those portions are repetitive, uninteresting and for some of them completely idiotic "hey, after they fought a gazillion enemies and finally won, why not throw players into a tight corridor full of mines that are absolutely certain to kill them so they will have to do the whole thing all over again because, of course, we're not going to add an autosave in the middle of this little beauty!"

Personally that's where I stopped playing. Remove the cyberspace parts, or at least make them optional and the whole thing is OK, graphically much better than the original at least...

But I guess I can't really complain about SS2 "enhanced". Since I made the stupid decision to pre-order the SS remake, SS2E is free for me. Too bad I probably won't be able to play it. Depends on the release date I guess. If it's next year, I'm definitely screwed. XD

I never finished the SS1 remake...I think it was two things: I ran out of ammo with no way to get more and it saved right at that point (thanks for the checkpoint-only system, assholes!), and I wasn't all that motivated.

They at least could've brought the character models up to the current decade's aesthetics. :P

The SS2 enhanced or remake or whatever it is...enh. I'll probably give it a chance when it comes out, but I'm not exactly beyond my capacity for happiness over the thing.
